The CISG contains rules governing the making and interpretation of international contracts for the sale of goods. It also provides rules governing obligations and remedies of the parties to such transactions. The CISG does not deprive sellers and buyers of the freedom to mold their contracts to their specifications.

The CISG also includes Final Provisions addressing such matters as ratification, acceptance, approval and accession; the interplay between the CISG and other overlapping international agreements; declarations and reservations; entry-into-force dates; and denunciation of the Convention.

Transactions that involve goods but that are not sales e.g., leases of goods, use of goods purely as collateral for financial credit are not covered. 2. The contract of sale must be international, defined as between parties located in different States. Purely domestic transactions are outside the scope of the CISG.
