The last known time that Miss Smith came to see him was yesterday morning at his office at a time when he appeared very ill with a heavy headache and had become quite hysterical. She was not quite herself. On inquiry, it appeared that Mr. Smith, the lawyer, who was in the office on the day before yesterday, had come into contact with the same family as Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Smith's brother, Mr. Dickson. This latter, it appears from a conversation with him yesterday, and from the police statement of Thomas B. Brown, clerk at the County Court, yesterday morning at 8 o'clock, informed the police that at one o'clock this morning he had entered a room and found the old gentleman, Mrs. Smith, sitting up, with his nose buried in some papers and a large cigar in his teeth. His face and head had begun to show signs of distress, and he appeared to be very delirious.
