No current Texas or federal law requires private-sector employers to provide paid or unpaid leave of any kind, although some amount of unpaid leave may be necessary as a reasonable accommodation in the event of a disability, pregnancy, or other condition protected under a specific statute.

The ordinance, found in Chapter 20 of the Dallas City Code, originally went into effect on August 1, 2019, and required employers with five or more Dallas-based employees to provide one hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked.

In most companies an employee earns between 5 to 9 paid sick days per year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Business can also allocate an amount of unpaid sick days an employee can utilize per year without the time off affecting their employment.

How much paid sick leave can I take? At a minimum, California law requires that full-time employees get 24 hours (or 3 days) of paid sick leave time per 12-month period.

Dallas was the third city in Texas to enact a paid sick leave ordinance, following the adoption of nearly identical laws in Austin and San Antonio.
