In 2008, Verizon proposed a deal in which the cellular company would pay 50 million and take over the space on the north side of the Miami Herald headquarters. The paper sold the building last year. The sale of the land has not yet closed, but the purchase is not necessarily a done deal. The Florida Bar has been informed that the firm wants to make a motion that would require the court to allow a trial before the final judgment is reached in the sale. That is the bar for any such sale involving the state of Florida and its courts, according to Florida Bar lawyer Joe Arjuna. It is also something that should be explored at “anytime in the near future” by the Florida Bar. “It would not be an unusual case to explore, given that the land is subject to a court action,” he said. A representative for the Herald referred all inquiries to Verizon. This is not the first time the paper has been involved in litigation concerning the sale of a piece of property to a third party.
