Description

Property is lost when the owner does not know where property is located, but intends to find it. In other words, lost property is property that an owner has misplaced without intending to give up ownership. A person who finds lost property does not acquire title to the property. At most, a finder of lost property is entitled to possession of the property until it is claimed by the owner. Some States have statutes that permit the finder of lost property to sell or keep it after a certain period of time. Usually, these statutes require some sort of publication of notice. This form is a generic example that may be referred to when preparing such a form for your particular state. It is for illustrative purposes only. Local laws should be consulted to determine any specific requirements for such a form in a particular jurisdiction.
