Federal jurors are paid $50 a day. Jurors can receive up to $60 a day after serving 45 days on a grand jury. (Employees of the federal government are paid their regular salary in lieu of this fee.) Jurors also are reimbursed for reasonable transportation expenses and parking fees.

Avoiding it, however, is ill advised: you cannot simply refuse and it is a criminal offence to not answer a jury summons without reasonable cause. You may, however, be able to defer (or possibly be excused) if you've served in the last two years or have a good reason.

Payment. You will be paid a $50.00 attendance fee for each day you are required to report for jury duty. However, you will not be paid if you appear and are excused for a reason that was well known to you at the time you received your jury summons.

Bring your jury summons and the completed juror information card that you received in the mail (if you completed the juror information card online, then there is no need to bring it). Wear comfortable but appropriate clothing and take a jacket or sweater since some courtrooms can get cold.

You will be paid by the county in an amount not less than $6.00 and not more than $50.00 per day or fraction of a day served. However, the Commissioners Court of a county may choose to reduce or eliminate the daily compensation for prospective jurors who attend court for only one day without actually serving on a jury.

If you skip jury duty in Texas, you will be held in contempt of court, and the judge might impose a fine of up to $1,000. You can avoid paying the fine if you have a valid reason for missing the summons.

The deferral date must be on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday, at least six weeks from your current summons date.
