A Safety Data Sheet (SDS) is a detailed document written by the chemical manufacturer for a specific chemical. Manufacturers, distributors, or importers must provide SDSs for each hazardous chemical to downstream users.

Employers are required by law to provide workers with access to SDSs. UC San Diego facilities where hazardous materials are handled are also required by law to either retain hard copies of SDSs provided by manufacturers or teach all personnel how to obtain SDSs electronically.

Purpose. A Safety Data Sheet (formerly called Material Safety Data Sheet) is a detailed informational document prepared by the manufacturer or importer of a hazardous chemical. It describes the physical and chemical properties of the product.

The Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) (29 CFR 1910.1200(g)), revised in 2012, requires that the chemical manufacturer, distributor, or importer provide Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) (formerly MSDSs or Material Safety Data Sheets) for each hazardous chemical to downstream users to communicate information on these hazards.
