As the country was still assessing the damage, hundreds of thousands of New Orleans poured into the city's shelter. There, they were forced to share cramped and contaminated living conditions, forced to seek shelter in the dark, and, in some cases, left without food or water. After days of waiting for federal aid that never arrived, most residents fled and sought safety in the Super dome. They had no choice but to endure a brutal night of looting and brutality by city police, including the brutal beating and killing of Alonzo Smith, a black man, by eight New Orleans Police Officers. Some were killed outright. Among those who were rescued after days of trying were the survivors who had been exposed to the toxic smoke of the fires, who suffered respiratory illness and were forced into FEMA camps. In the aftermath of the Katrina disaster, the United States committed 18 billion to help the people of the Gulf Coast.
