Maryland Appearance of Counsel is a type of court proceeding in which a lawyer or attorney appears on behalf of a party or client. This type of legal representation is different from an in-court appearance, as counsel is not physically present in the courtroom. Instead, counsel typically prepares and files documents with the court, and may communicate with the court through written or electronic means. There are two types of Maryland Appearance of Counsel: Pro HAC Vice and Limited Appearance. Pro HAC Vice is when an out-of-state attorney is allowed to represent a client in a specific Maryland court case. This type of appearance requires the permission of the court and the payment of a fee. Limited Appearance is when an attorney agrees to represent a client in a specific court case, but does not provide any additional legal services after the appearance. This type of appearance does not require permission from the court or payment of a fee.
